You know this whole Zune thing is starting to look really cool. When it comes to Ipod vs. Microsoft players, I'd choose Ipod, just cause they've done it for years and it looks like it works. Now Microsoft seems to be starting from scratch in the media player market (Although they say they will still support current ones. Yeah. That's what Sega said for the Dreamcast). From the sounds of it, the first device(s) will be a typical music player similar to the Ipod(video) with a nano version to come a bit later. What I really like about this whole deal is that they won't be using any existing Microsoft software, stores, anything really. It's truelly starting from scratch. Another kicker I really like is that they want to convert Ipodders. If you have an Ipod, the Zune players will scan for your Itunes, and download the music for free on the new player. How cool is that?!?!!! Check out Engadget's breakdown of everything we know so far.

Star Trek" is dead, long live "Star Trek". Paramount is resurrecting its "Star Trek" franchise by setting "Mission: Impossible III" helmer J.J. Abrams to produce and direct the eleventh "Star Trek" feature, aiming for a 2008 release reports Variety.

Abrams, who's highly buzzed M:I-III marks his feature directing debut, is most famous for creating and producing such hit series as "Lost", "Alias" and "Felicity". Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, Abrams' producing team from "Lost," also will produce the yet-to-be-titled feature.

The project, to be penned by Abrams and "Alias"/M:I-III scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, looks like it'll be a prequel of the franchise with the story set in the early days of original series characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock - including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

"Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most durable performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six shows spanning five decades.

The decision to relaunch comes a year after UPN pulled the plug on "Star Trek: Enterprise" amid dismal ratings, and four years after "Star Trek: Nemesis" turned in the worst performance of the ten films with $43 million domestic.

Its expected long time producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga will not be involved and their proposed plans for an eleventh feature, including a script by Erik Jendresen, have been scrapped.

So Michael Bay supposedly signed on to direct Transformers last week. I like Bay, but he's no Spielberg*. Think Pearl Harbor. Think Armageddon. Do you want this man directing a live action Transformers? Yes, he'll get the fundage and talent for the CG, but can he do character development? Sure he can make it action packed, but can he show us an appealing story from beginning to end?

His next movie is The Island. It's a very Matrixy/Philip K. Dicky feel movie. But there is potential for both character development, or character interaction. I want freakin emotion.I want even just the slightest bit of heart tugging out of this movie. Why? Because I'm judging Bay from this movie. This movie is kind of outside his usual box that he does his usual movies in. If this movie does anything for me then I have faith in him with the Transformers movie. I guarentee you that if you make the transformer/human relationship a beautiful one, your movie will be successful not only with the fans but with everyone elso too.

* - I use Speilberg as a term for a really good all around director, but not specifically the man himself.

Speaking of Corpse Bride. Guess who has rights to the toys?

Warner Bros. Consumer Products announced today that McFarlane Toys has been named the master toy licensee for Tim Burton's latest stop-motion, animated feature film, "Corpse Bride", which is scheduled for release by Warner Bros. Pictures in Fall 2005.

Capturing the film experience, McFarlane Toys will produce a full product line inspired by the upcoming feature film, including collectible action figures, bendable figures, PVC and plush toys. Additionally, this agreement marks the first time McFarlane Toys has expanded its categories to include fashion dolls, bobbleheads, novelties and gifts such as candles, glassware mugs, pewter pieces and ornaments.

This exciting new line of merchandise from McFarlane Toys will hit stores nationwide in conjunction with the film's launch. Corpse Bride products will be distributed in specialty and mid-tier retail outlets nationwide. McFarlane Toys is developing its largest licensing program ever around the Corpse Bride property. Retailer-specific programs will be announced in Spring 2005.
