Drawing in scale is easy -- photoshop was originally for print, so you can get really accurate printable maps. you can also set up a grid to use to help you along.

Yeah. That's what I didn't want to resort to, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to. It's really the best thing to do. Those are some good looking maps. Photoshop can be to scale, right? How hard would it be to draw in scale?

dude, i've been looking for one for 2 years now, and still hate everything i've seen.

- Campaign Cartographer 2 is ok, but it's crap to use, and has a steep learning curve. It does have things like fractal coastlines, and a nice selection of clipart.
- Fractal Mapper 7 is good for campaign-wide maps, and can generate random worlds. The local mapping isn't that great, and crashed a lot on my machine (your mileage may vary).
- DungeonCrafter is really good for making dungeons, but not so much for local or regional maps.

The best tool I've found is Photoshop. It's just plain easier to make maps in PS. You can create brushes that make trees, rocks, etc; use clipart from campaign cartographer, and generate random world maps.

Here's a good way to make a world map in Photoshop CS2 (well, any version, really):
1. Create a new document roughly the proportions of a world map (usually a 2:1 aspect ration -- I like 2500x1250 pixels).
2. Set colors to B&W. Use Filter>Render>Clouds
3. Jack the Contrast all the way up -- Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast and set Contrast all the way to the right
You'll now have continents. You'll likely do this a number of times before you have shapes you really like. You can also use the bucket fill to close in areas you want.

Then you can use basica photoshop skills to color everything else into a world map.

Here's a few maps I've drawn in photoshop:
Kingdom of Menalis
Blaidd Drwgg, a small town that the PCs come back to (darker version)
Town of Cardyff, where the weird wizard lies

Can someone find me a free map editor for D&D? I'd like something that's both simple and graphic. Thanks.
