It is compelling, but I'm not sold on it. I can understand the TPTB wanting to create their own time travel theory, but the ones suggested in this theory seem far-fetched. TPTB worked extremely hard to avoid paradoxes for Desmonds episode (and actually failed).

paradox created
Spoiler Alert!
Since Eloise died as a result of time travelling, she never would have gone to the future to know the maze.

The course correcting events the theory suggests is sloppy, IMO. You can't slap a 'fate' sticker on everything you can't explain, and if this is what TPTB are doing, then they don't need to be making TV shows.

My own theory
Desmonds episode is the key to this time travel mystery. The answer TPTB are providing is that, yes, you can travel back in time. You can travel in the future too, but you better find a constant, cause your mind won't be able to take it. There is no virus. Danielles crew went crazy from the effects of not having a constant. The captain of the freighter reminds his crew of that. "Remember what happened to Minkowski!" Desmond has only gone back in time, but Minkowski has gone forward. So what if you are dead? This is where fate comes in. Let's talk about Charlie. During the hatch implosion, I suggest Charlie did a little jumping as Desmond did, but to the future. The island needed him to send a message to Hurley in the future. Remember how disoriented Charlie acted in the Season 2 finale? The only thing that time travels is your conscience. If you go past your existance, you are a ghost (Charlie, Christian).

Fate does play a role in Lost, and it's more than just being the answer to unanswered questions. Fate is what happens when the island does something to protect itself. I had a Spaceship Earth theory at one time, and although it is practically debunked, I still feel the island plays a huge role in the Earth's survival, or even life's existance.

So how does a 26 year old have a seventy year old womb? Let's leave time travel out of the picture. The orignal dialogue for this case went like this...

Quote:
ALPERT [changing slides]: What do you see?

JULIET: Well, that's a human womb, obviously. Judging from the decomposition of the endometrium I would say that the woman was somewhere in her seventies.

ALPERT: Well, actually, she's 26.

So she judged the age of the womb by the decomposition of the endometrium. If a doctor saw this, would he consider time travel? My point is the womb is in a condition to where child birth would damage it. This could be a fate thing. Sure, the time anomaly could have affected it. I'm just saying the answer isn't "She went back in time, her womb aged, but she did not."

Forgot to mention Ben's awesome manipulation/conning abilities. Since he was free to move too and from the island, he too, could have experienced the same mind time travelling as Desmond. He collected information from the future, to know what he needs to do in the past. This was his constant...

This is probably the most compelling theory that I've read to date. It touches on a lot of things we've talked about, but makes some strong, new arguments too.

Do not read unless you've seen the Season 3 finale.

Spoiler Alert!

Jack is Jacob

Via email correspondence, my friend came up with this theory. I thought about it, and we decided to run with it, because of all the things we saw that fit with it. I give him the credit for coming up with it.

General Info
A) The inhabitants and the Island - They live in a symbiosis with one another. The inhabitants protect the island, just as the island protects the inhabitants. This is what 'good and bad' people are. Ones that are good are compatible with the island. Ones that are bad, are not. Dharma was not, unfortunately. One form of protection is rapid healing, and slow aging.
B) Time on the island - Time on the island is a failed attempt by Dharma to match the aging abilities of the island. The Looking Glass was used to regulate this. For the most part, time passes normally, but there are occasional hiccups. Upon returning to the island, Jack encounters one of these hiccups. This hiccup brings him back about 100 years into the past. This is why he can't find anyone or anything.
C) The island in the past - We can go 2 ways here. Either Jack teaches the inhabitants a few things, or the inhabitants are old Dharma Employees from failed testing of the Looking Glass. I'll go with the prior to avoid too much confusion. So Jack arrives in the past. For a simple analogy, if you were to go to caveman times and build a bicycle or a fire, those cavemen would think of you as magical, or something greater than them, correct? Well this is the light that the inhabitants saw Jack. He even taught them English (please don't roll your eyes). Since Jack is a doctor, he probably was able to teach them a lot more useful things too. Toward the end of his life, he became "Jacob". I won't explain the transition, but Jack sounds like Jacob, so maybe it sounded like it because of the inhabitants' original accent. Or maybe Jacob means Great Man in Inhabitantese. Anyway he begins telling the inhabitants of how they must protect the people from the plane crash. He doesn't say "plane crash" or anything. He just makes a list and tells them that they are 'good people'. He needs to send a message to Locke to keep Jack from leaving the island.
D) Locke - Since the island and the inhabitants work together, the island has the ability to steer certain people in the right direction. Locke is one of these important people. I almost want to say that Locke is a descendant of an inhabitant. Remember when his mother said he was immaculately conceived? Maybe this is one of the abilities of mothers on the island. Maybe it's sexual reproduction that kills mothers.
E) Jacob's fading - Jacob is fading out, because Jack's fate is coming really close to Jacob's. He didn't start fading till Jack was born. You can't have 2 of the same person in the same space/time continuum. When Jack succeeds or fails is when Jacob completely vanishes. This makes me think of Back to the Future. Remember when his family started to fade out of the picture? This avoids alternate timelines, and any other confusing stuff. Jack goes back in time. Jacob lives to start a chain of events that keeps his life and other's lives from going down an unchosen path. Instead of "Jacob never existed cause Jack didn't go to the past again", the answer is "Since Jacob was able to change his future/past, he stops existing".
F) Ben - Since Jacob was a very old man, he did not recognize him as Jack. Jack may have remembered Ben and knew this was him, but since he couldn't be heard, he never could stop him. Or maybe Jacob gave Ben an answer Ben didn't like, so Ben manipulated the situation to keep the inhabitants from seeing Jacob. Ben always says that Jacob will only talk to Ben, right? They respect Jacob, and I'm sure Ben put a lot of fear into the inhabitants. So now the inhabitants must respect Ben on, supposedly, Jacobs orders.
G) Jack's flash forward in the finale - Yes. If Jack/Jacob is successful, then this episode only happened once. Don't get in the habit of saying that it "never happened." It did happen, but just once. This outcome, as we saw, was unfavorable. Maybe the others made it off the island too, and they were dying one by one. Like the movie Final Destination, but a little different. They were supposed to get off the island, but not right then. Since Dharma already screwed with space/time, it is trying to correct itself. Maybe killing off the ones that made it off the island was how it was to correct itself.
H) Jack's dad - No. He's dead. Jack was just delirious.

My favorite thing about this whole theory is that it turns one of the worst episodes of Lost into the most important. That episode is Stranger in a Strange Land. Remember what Achara 'saw' in Jack? "You are a leader, a great man. But this, this makes you lonely, and frightened, and angry." Who else do we know that was said to be a leader and a great man? Jacob. Also, wouldn't Jack be lonely, frightened, and angry upon arriving on the island in the past? His tattoo said "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us." If Jack was Jacob, this tattoo sounds pretty dead on.

Theory on why the plane crashed. Theory involves info from these episodes.
Pilot
Orientation
Lockdown

Spoiler Alert!
This timeline will follow the 108 minute buttoon push.

Format
A - B (C) or [D]
A= minutes in each 108
B= description of event
(C) = Time since Oceanic took off
[D] = Time after Oceanic turns around

1st 108
78 minutes - Oceanic takes off for LA (0 hours, 0 minutes)
108 minutes - Desmond pushes the button (0 hours, 30 minutes)

2nd 108
108 minutes - Oceanic on route to LA (2 hours, 18 minutes)
108 minutes - Desmond pushes the button (2 hours, 18 minutes)

3rd 108
108 minutes - Oceanic on route to LA (4 hours, 6 minutes)
108 minutes - Desmond pushes the button (4 hours, 6 minutes)

4th 108
108 minutes - Pilot claims radio outage and turns around for nearest airport (5 hours, 54 minutes)
108 minutes - Desmond pushes the button (5 hours, 54 minutes)

5th 108
60 minutes - Oceanic on route to Fiji [1 hour, 0 minutes]
60 minutes - PA announces 20 minute warning to evacuate Swan station. [1 hour, 0 minutes]
80 minutes - Blastdoors come down [1 hour, 20 minutes]
108 minutes - Pilot of Oceanic claims turbulance [1 hour, 48 minutes]
108 minutes - Magnet powers up pulls in Oceanic, and food drop [1 hour, 48 minutes]

The pilot was instructed to go on route for 6 hours. After that point he was to kill the radios. This was to keep rescuers in the wrong location. The pilot turns around and heads back to a cartain location. The only way on the island was to be pulled in with the magnet. Typically the button is pushed to keep the magnet from powering up. But during food drops and such, the hatch crew are evacuated to allow the magnet to power up. Evacuation and the blast doors are just a safety protocol for the hatch crews. The island is hidden, so instrumental and visual landing is out of the question. The only time the magnet activates is to pull in the food drop. Unfortunately both the food drop and Oceanic 815 collided. This is why the plane broke up. Fortunately not all was lost as the magnet was able to pull the wreckage to safety (for the most part).

Contaminating the forums with yet another one of my wacky Lost theories.

Spoiler Alert!
"It is a well-provisioned ship, this on which we sail through space. If the bread and beef above decks seem to grow scarce, we but open a hatch and there is a new supply, of which before we never dreamed. And very great command over the services of others comes to those who as the hatches are opened are permitted to say, 'This is mine!'"- Progress & Poverty

Science
Homeostasis - The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
Self Organization

Faith
The Gaia Hypothesis - I suggest Chapter 2. This could be put in science too, but my theory is a little more extreme, so I am putting it in faith.
Genesis 1:1 - 1:31
Genesis 4:1 - 4:16

It is important that you take the time to review some of the links I have provided to make my theory more believable. Its borderline sci-fi, but I believe it is closer to reality than anything, and this is something the creators have said, "it won't venture too far into science fiction as its mysteries unfold. "We're still trying to be ... firmly ensconced in the world of science fact."
If we are going to have a series that pits science vs. faith, we are allowed to delve into 'sci-fi', well faith isn't sci-fi, but you get what I mean.

Do no dishonor to the earth least you dishonor the spirit of man. - Henry Beston
You know how comic books are exaggerations of everyday life? All superheroes have their strengths (superpowers) and weaknesses. Just like humans. We as human beings have our strengths. A brain capable of amazing thoughts and ideas, and we have our weaknesses. When talking physical weaknesses, how do we compare to a lion. Are you protected from a bite to the neck? Nope. That's why a lion goes for the neck. It's a weakness. We use our strengths to protect us. Our strengths make us weapons to fend off the beast. Or body armor to protect our vitals. Imagine if the Earth was a living thing. Not as an animal, but as a very complex plant. When I say complex, I mean a little sentient. What are we protecting when we protect ourselves? Wear helmets when doing dangerous activities. We were protective chest and neck equipment when going into battle, or a football game. Why do we protect those parts, and, say, not our legs or arms as much? It's because we have organs that must be protected to continue life. These organs do complex things to keep us functioning as human beings. If the Earth is a living being, where are its vital organs? How does it protect its organs. How does it scratch an itch, or put on a helmet? If you've read the links provided above, you'll see that the Earth does many things to compensate or regulate itself. The Earth, if alive, is a complex being. Maybe even more complex than you or I. What if the Earth had vital organs like us? What if one of those organs was hidden for the life of itself. What if a recent activity caused this organ to reveal itself? I suggest that the island is a location of one of these vital organs of the Earth. Sometime in the first half of the 20th century, this island had emerged. As one of the articles above suggests, man is actually an important part of Earth. One of the arguments is that in order for Earth to be a living being, it has to reproduce. Someone suggested that man is its form of reproduction. When it finds the necessary time, man will learn to terraform on other planets. We get all our resources from the Earth, so this theory is reasonably possible.

The Hanso Legacy
Toward the end of the century Hanso found this island. I?m playing with the idea that there was a Hanso Legacy. It all began with the Black Rock. Hanso had an ancestor on that ship, and this man, Magnus Hanso if you will, had made a map of the location of the island. One way or another Magnus was able to get word back to his family along with the map. He wrote of how the island appeared out of nowhere and his last known whereabouts before becoming shipwrecked. For generations, the Hanso family has been looking for this island. The legend was that Magnus had found the Fountain of Youth upon this island. The message of the Fountain of Youth was encrypted into his letter home. It was never found till Alvar. An island that seemed to appear out of thin air, then disappear. Alvar, being in the position that he was, was able to fund a research team to study the island, and Alvar knew the island was key to world peace.

The Dharma Initiative
Dharma, the funded group, after a few preliminary studies, had other ideas. World domination. Dharma also ran some unethical experiments without the knowledge of Alvar. After some inspections, Alvar ordered some of the experimental programs to be shutdown. Some were, and some were not. The Dharma Initiative felt constricted with their now limited research abilities. One of these studies involved the source of the electromagnetivity, and possibly the miraculous recovery of many diseases. Dharma had used and abused this portion of the island, the heart of the island if you will, and after some time an incident occurred. The incident was the near death of the heart. Dharma was able to save the heart, but it involved the task of continuously administering a particular routine for the heart to survive. What originally was a 'research and obtain', became 'support and doctor.' Soon after this incident, Dharma was officially shutdown by Hanso. Being so deep into their beliefs and research, Dharma refused. Knowing the island, Dharma had the advantage, and within the next year or so, they were able to secretly infiltrate the Hanso Foundation, and in the process corrupting it. The Dharma Initiative was so secretive, that even some of their own didn?t know what was going on. Not all of Dharma was with the decision to retaliate. A few, refusing to follow Dharma, went into hiding. Enter the Others.

The Others and The Survivors
Earth was in danger. What seems like a chaotic turn of events to get a select few to the island was really a well orchestrated plan to save the Earth. As we are also a part of the organism that is Earth, we are the only ones that can save it. The children are the medicine, and the adults are the doctors. With some rejected research by Dharma, the Others had figured out that the planet was in danger. Like our survivors had visions of certain events, the Others also had visions. The most important one was of Oceanic 'crashing' on the island. They had a mission. Recover the children. They didn't know 'why', they just knew the 'what'.

Conclusion and Expectations
Through out this story we see a constant struggle between Faith and Science. Faith has the Others, Alvar Hanso, and some survivors. Science has the rest of Dharma, and some of the survivors. Asking "why did they take the kids?" "What does the button do?" is like asking, "Why does God let children die?" or "Why can't God save my mom?" Just cause science can't answer it, doesn't mean faith won't either. I believe we will see more of the Others, and we will come to realize that they ARE good people, like some of them have been saying. We will see more people's faith being tested, and even our own faith will be tested. Every argument in these forums is basically a faith vs. science question. Both faith and science is the tool for the unknown. If there is an unknown, there will always be science and faith to keep us treading into it. Everything in Lost can be put into these 2 categories, just like every individual watching the show. So you got to ask yourself, are you a man of faith? Or a man of science?

So, there's still a lot of other mysteries to consider. We talk a lot about the hatch(es), the Hanso and Dharma groups, and the others. But what about:
- Why are the numbers bad?
- What is the monster/black smoke/security system?
--- and what is it protecting?
--- why does it kill some, but enlighten others?
- What's this illness that everyone (hatch inhabitants, Danielle, et al.) but the Losties are so scared of?
- What's with the Others and babies? They wanted Danielle's, they wanted Claires.
--- Why did the psychic make sure that Claire was on the plane at the very least second?
--- Jin's fatherless conception?

When Gabie's mom was in the hospital, she got the March issue of Readers Digest. There is an interesting article about remote viewing in there. They basically interviewed a guy who is in a 'secret' government group in charge of remote viewing. These guys are given coordinates, and the viewer tells them everything they can see at that location. Sometimes they can sketch something that looks remarkably like the location they are viewing. Pretty interesting read and it had Lost written all over it too. So grab a copy!!!

A theory came to me yesterday on my lunch at work. I spent a couple of hours typing this up last night/this morning. Between 11PM and 1AM. Yes, I'm obsessed. If you've watched the orientation video AFTER the splice, then this spoiler is safe to read. This theory chronicles the events before Oceanic 851's crash.

Read after What Kate Did
Spoiler Alert!
Watch the orientation video.

”Station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory where scientist could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island. CUT. Not long after the experiments began, however, there was…an incident…and since that time, the following protocol has been observed. POSSIBLE CUT. Every 108 minutes, the button must be pushed. From the moment the alarm sounds, you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor. CUT …duction into the program. When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert, and most important that when the alarm sounds, the code be entered correctly and in a timely fashion. Do not attempt to use the computer CUT

I’ve underlined the work ‘originally’. This is important.

1939-1945
Alvar Hanso makes a name for himself making weapons and ammunition for many resistance movements through out Europe.

1945-1970
Alvar Hanso becomes THE weapons man. He provides and funds companies to improve weapons. Hanso spends much of this time researching improvements himself. His thoughts go from better weapons, to better people. “How can I make the world a safer place? Maybe we can improve people’s lives to where they won’t have to resort to war.” After many years of researching, and many years of reclusive ness, Hanso comes to the conclusion that there is no hope for man. He realizes the only way to have a perfect society is to start fresh.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Alvar Hanso funds a new company responsible for making a weapon that is designed to only destroy human life, possibly affects animals too. He plans to begin life on an island he purchased after learning of its strange electromagnetic events. From here on out, we will call it Endgame.

1970
Hanso begins to recruit a group of scientists who specialize in specific categories to make his ultimate goal possible. These scientists specialize in Meteorology, Psychology, Parapsychology, Zoology, Electromagnetism, and Reconstructive Utopian Studies. Meteorology and Psychology studies will be based on the Parapsychology. Hanso had access to some Nazi records after WWII and found enough factual evidence to begin research in parapsychology. Zoology will be necessary for Hanso’s Endgame. Think Noah’s Island. It’s interesting that Hanso is an anagram of Noah(s). Electromagnetism will be used to propel his weapon, and will also be used as a power source after the Endgame. I will quote Lewis Mumford to explain the difference between Utopia of Escape and Reconstructive Utopia. This is found in his book, The Story of Utopias.

"One of these functions is escape or compensation; it seeks an immediate release from the difficulties or frustrations of our lot. The other attempts to provide a condition for our release in the future. The Utopias that correspond to these two functions, I shall call the Utopias of escape and the Utopias of reconstruction. The first leaves the external world the way it is; the second seeks to change it so that one may have intercourse with it on one's own terms. In one we build impossible castles in the air; in the other we consult a surveyor and an architect and a mason and proceed to build a house which meets our essential needs; as well as houses built of stone and mortar are capable of meeting them."

As luck would have it, Hanso found the DeGroots. The DeGroots have based a lot of their research on B.F. Skinners research. B.F. Skinner is the inventor of the operant conditioning chamber aka Skinner box. What this box did was allow someone to study the behavioral response in animals, usually rats and monkeys. The subject would do something, and they would be rewarded, to put it simply. With the use of this box, a person has many response requirements that would produce many actions. Read ‘Superstition’ in the Pigeon for more info.
http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Skinner/Pigeon/
Hanso gathered these scientists and placed them all on this island to research till their hearts content.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Alvar Hanso has his own scientists that know of the Endgame. These people are unknown to the rest of the Dharma group. A majority of them within the Reconstructive Utopian Studies and Parapsychology.

1970-1980
These group of scientist made a name for themselves. The Dharma Initiative. Led by the DeGroots, their research was to improve life, and hopefully bring about a utopian society. They decide to build a kind of biodome on the island. One of the tests the scientists do is try to recondition animals to learn to live in an environment that was different than their own. They developed a machine that basically turned the entire island into a Skinner box. A lot of their research was possible because of the harnessing of the electromagnetic phenomenon. This virtual Skinner Box is able to produce a holographic image anywhere on the island. It can produce sound, images, and smells. It even has the ability to physically interact with anything on the island. Another project is the ‘security system’. This machine is basically the first aid kit of the Skinner Box project. It also can gather information that cannot be gathered by the Skinner Box alone. Close to the end of the decade, Hanso’s weapons company had built its weapon to Hanso’s liking. He informs Marvin Candle, head of Electromagnetism Division, that he has a new addition to his station. He informs Candle that he wants him to incorporate the weapon into his research. Candle tells him that he won’t do it, and Hanso threatens to pull the plug on Dharma. Candle reluctantly decides to do Hanso’s wishes. The only way to launch the weapon is from station 3. Candle is able to incorporate it into the station, but it requires them to input a code to keep the weapon from launching. The incorporation of the missile is the ‘incident’ that Candle speaks of in the Orientation video. Hanso takes measures to insure Endgames secrecy. One of these things is telling the scientists to not use their computers to contact the outside world. Insuring that it will “destroy the project”.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Hanso and his research scientists (not Dharma) begin hand picking their subjects for their Endgame project. He needs someone to continue life in his new utopian society.

1980-1985
Dharma retaliates. Dharma scientists with Candle in the lead learn more and more of Endgame. They decide to sabotage the plan. Dharma knows that there are some scientists that are Hanso’s moles. So they are subtle in their sabotage. One of these things is altering the Orientation videos. They remove the importance of not using the computers to contact others. The film is hidden and not destroyed. Candle decided that he may need it later as some sort of evidence. Hanso’s gang learns of the revolt and attempt to silence Dharma. Some are killed, and some go into hiding.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Hanso’s scientists develop a serum that enhances brain activity, more precise, telepathic abilities. Now they need test subjects…

1985-1988
With Dharma gone, Hanso’s team begins their experiments. Altering Dharma’s research, they adapt control numbers for their subjects. They transmit this number out to sea. Danielle’s boat shipwrecks on the island. Her crew picked up the transmission. Everyone on her crew is given the serum, except Danielle. All reject the serum and go crazy. They kidnap her daughter and inject her. The girl is a success. Hanso’s team realizes that in order for the serum to be successful, it must be administered near birth. Meanwhile, the utopians are picked and action is taken to lead them to the island. Their arrival to the island must be believable. They must believe that they have come to the island at their own will, or at least, at nature/God’s will.
BEHIND THE SCENES
There are a few Dharmans left. Candle for one. They continue to leave clues to sabotage Hanso’s endgame project. Luckily they still have access to their research.

Some things to note
Read after Maternity Leave
Spoiler Alert!
Alex has telepathic abilities. She talks to the crash survivors telepathically to help or hurt them through out their days. Sometimes she is being told what to do by Hanso’s crew.

The stallion is a stimulant used on Kate to lead her somewhere. Did she take the bait?

Jack’s father is another stimulant. They needed water, and Jack’s father led him to water, NOT his coffin.

We really don’t know who is sending these messages, but I’m thinking its Dharma.

Read after The Hunting Party
Spoiler Alert!
I think Zeke is one of the Hanso group.

Now after reading my theory, watch the orientation video again. At the end, there is a sleight hint of discontent when Candle says the name "Alvar Hanso" during his "thank you" sentence.
