Well, you can pick up from the modern series; which is technically a continuation of the original, but also meant to serve as a starting point for new fans, too. You won't necessarily need to have seen anything prior to the Ninth Doctor (we're currently on the Tenth).

Dr.who is a daunting prospect to say the least. I have only seen a few episodes, But there are just so many.I did abit of research and I know there are two spin offs it has created. I have heard its great, alot of positives, but oh so many to start from scratch. I guess I fear the doctor.... shiver |

Hey man, you've seen the new Doctor Who series, right? There's also Torchwood, a spin-off after the second season of Doctor Who. You can borrow my copies if you need to.

I am viewing season 10 of sg1 now and I just got to see the 200th episode for the first time.Hilarious, I enjoyed it so very much. One of the best episodes ive seen on any series in a long time. The reference to farscape about floored me. I literally just finished the farscape series and the peacekeeper wars for the first time about a week ago, so seeing them spoof it was great. The asgard Rygel was hilarious "YotZ"! |

So you guys were correct Serenity was much betta now that I have seen Firefly. Not bad overall, prolly would have gotten better with time, as some shows tend to degrade this one was getting better i think. Shame really, I did have one problem, the old guns that fired like they were futuristic sounding. weird. Stargate seasons 1-8 were good, im on like 8 something.... |

Great quote from Daniel Jackson - " The pentagon intelligence that I can understand, but the president, grrr I voted for him! " Nicely delivered not over the top but very effective. Since I was harsh on E-14 Hathor, I figured I'd be nice to E-17 Enigma I liked the terminator cutting the arm reference in tin man episode hehhe. |

You watched Serenity before watching the series? Sorry man...Yeah, you really need to watch the series first -- Like Ed said, Serenity is the wrap-up to the series. Like the Peacekeeper Wars was for Farscape. |

I think so. After watching the series you have better understanding of the characters and their motivations. Serenity to me was just a long episode that wrapped everything up. Serenity to me was like a Star Trek movie. Honestly I don't think I'd like Star Trek movies if I wasn't into the show before hand.

So far im on sg1 e - 14 - Hathor ( great recommendation BtW on sg1 )In the end Ill prolly just end up watching all the reccomendations slowly but surely. And this is so far the only episode I didnt like. The goddess is not attractive at all, I wouldnt hit that after a night in a club with low lights and jaegar bombs. And the pheromone thing she used was by far so weak. I was waiting for Alicia Silverstone to show up and slap her like in that batman movie with all the neon. Hey ed does Serentity get any better after having seen the series? Because I have seen Serentity and I didnt like it very much, maybe with more background it could have been better. |

Firefly was awesome. It had so much potential but they canceled it way too early. The movie Serenity was a good wrap up. At least we got a little closure from the show. Battlestar Galactica and Heroes are my favorite show's right now. Babylon 5 was not bad. It's like a pepsi one version of DS9. Farscape was pretty awesome as well. If you haven't seen Band of Brothers yet you should cuz its pretty good. Scrubs is another personal favorite.

Yeah, SG1 is candy. It's fun, it's funny, it's a bit campy, and they explore a LOT of sci-fi motifs. And it's the anti-Startrek. The thing about that show is they even start making comments like "well, we're all about to die. I guess we're all about to get beamed up.... now." And they do. SG1 is interesting though -- it's a haven for all other sci-fi actors. John and Aryn from Farscape, The Doctor from Voyager. MacGuyver. Rommy from Andromeda. And a bunch of single-episode appearances from random people. Plus, there's a weird sort of cohesion and evolution that you only get from something that's been on the air for over 10 years. Yet, it's cheesy. But good. You can pretty much just watch the last season of Enterprise and be done with it. That's the season they really explored ST history (the enhanced humans like Khan, the reason Klingons looked like swarthy humans in TOS and had bumpy faces in all the other seasons, etc...). |

Man, can't believe I forgot X-Files. Character-wise, I think it's good. Does tension between factions (FBI vs. alien FBI vs. some secret order) count as character cohesion? Mulder and Scully work great together. They each have their in depth history, and it's interesting when they interact with each other. You may get mixed answers on SG1. They work great together, but it's sloppy. There is never a threat of someone dieing. Sure, they die, but it doesn't last long. So you may see it as "what's the point." With that said, I unrecommend SG1. It's for entertainment, pass the time, kind of show. Enterprise lacked character development. The stories even ended without any real revelation. What happened with mysterious guy leading the Suliban? I'm not really sure either. Unfortunately Enterprise didn't pick up till the last season. The last few episodes were the best of the series. Having multi-episodic storyarcs probably helped. I will tell you that House has the best writing I've ever seen. The character interaction is awesome. It's one of my favorite shows. I don't know if this season is the best, or I'm just noticing it a lot more now, but again, it's the best writing I've seen. I keep talking about the writing. What is cool is the great writing has nothing to do with the cases each episode. Rent the first disc. I'm sure you'll love it. |

I only buy the series if I really like it and want to support them, maybe if its imported bbc etc, want the special features, or if I cant find it free.I usually dont watch a series that is either at the height of its popularity or is currently being filmed. I like to be able to watch the series at my leisure or at my speed, sometimes I wanna watch alot of em, and sometimes I may not have time to tune in. As for sg1, I am progressing through the first season and will make my decision by the 3rd. I dont usually have crossover problems, like star fleet protocols and Daniel Jackson's inability to mess with every culture. Its more of a character issue, I have to like or dislike the roles they play, in other words I need to care enough about whats happening to the people, the cohesion, sometimes storylines aren't enough. Andromeda is a good example, I thought Tier and Dylan were dynamic characters, then a writer has a disagreement and leaves and then tier (cobb) leaves and then the show becomes a shrine to Sorbo's ego. Voyager is another example on the opposite scale, When I first started it, I was like whatever this is going to be redudant and boring. Then after about season 1, I was like We have to get these people home and not in 70 years (ya mean)! Also Harry Kim needs to get laid! These are some shows I am considering but will need more info are. X-Files - Classic but not the t2 version. I have seen some episodes, but I want to see them in order and all of em. Tombstone - word of mouth got around to me, so dunno Buffy - I dunno about this one... House - They are making episodes still.... so i dunno Enterprise - I dunno a canceled ST series doesnt boad well... Dr.who - Dunno Dunno dunno, I do like bbc =) Band of Bros - different genre but popular. One I do recommend however is Red Dwarf, for a simple, comedy sci fi. 8 series from the bbc, cheesey effects, over the top characters, very classic feel (like hitchhikers guide). I read the books first and that got me hooked. |

I'm on the 8th season of SG1. It was hard for me to get into, at first, but once you turn off your Star Trek part of your brain, you'll learn to accept it. I'm talking the Prime Directive and such. The cast of ST would be having cows on just about every episode. A bonus with SG1 is that you've got 10 seasons to watch and when you get done with that, you can move to Atlantis. Maybe by that time, they'll be into the 3rd series, and you can watch it as it airs.Lost is pretty awesome. I agree that it's went down hill since the first season, but it's still fun to watch. I love any of the Star Treks. I see you are already watching/watched that. 24 is pretty awesome. Well, I've only seen the first season and some of the second (Alias took my TV watching time). Now is the time to start watching it cause Wal-Mart will be selling the first 5 seasons for $20 a piece on Friday. Speaking of Alias. One of my all time favorite series. It probably helps that I was in love with Jennifer Garner. I watched a couple of episodes of Dexter, and it seemed like a pretty awesome show to watch. I stopped only because we didn't have that premium channel anymore. Heroes has been mentioned. Burn Notice. I'll put more as they come to me. |

Yeah, the last season of Andromeda sucked goatass.Sci-fi series I highly recommend: Battlestar Galactica (new series) (ongoing, 1 more season) Farscape Dead Like Me (quirky, stolen from On a Pale Horse) Doctor Who (New version) Torchwood (Doctor Who spin-off) Firefly (1 very short season Eureka (kinda quirky, marginally sci-fi) The Invisible Man (90's version) Total Recall 2070 (not based on the movie, based on the Philip K. Dick books) Supernatural (Buffy for guys) Non sci-fi: Burn Notice (ongoing, only 1 season so far) The Office (US version is better than the UK version after the first season) Spooks (Called MI-5 in the US, current season is 6th season) The Riches (only 1 season, but really good) Mini-series I recommend: Jekyll The Lost Room Obvious others that are still on: Heroes Lost (kinda lame, kinda cool) My Name is Earl Babylon 5 is good -- it's got a 5-year story arch that starts showing up in the 1st episode. The writing is cheesy, but the concept is great. SG1 we watched all the way through -- you get into it, and suddenly like 7 seasons later, you're like damn! only 3 more? Call or IM me if you want to borrow my copies... |

I have been on a series watching kick for some reason, and I need more input.!!So what are some good shows to watch, series wise? Here are some I have already seen. ST - Original tng ds9 voyager Andromeda Red Dwarf Any ideas on whats good? I started Stargate sg1 to see if I liked it, and im still deciding, im on ep.7 so i unno. Also Downloading BB5 and going to see if that is any good. The series can be anything not just sci fi. Just want to hear what you've seen and what you enjoyed, I like series that make me care about what happens to the characters, for example by the end of Andromeda I could have cared less what happened to them. But on the other hand moulder and scully need to still hook up after all these years. anyway Ill add more info later, time to watch something =) |
